What’s an Accessible Art to a Restrained Heart?

by MICHAELLA S. LEANO | 2nd Place in Essay Writing Contest (Language and Literary Month 2024)

For inconceivable years, words have been uttered, words have been written on any medium using any inks, only imprinted… yet they flow straight to one’s heart. For as long as one can remember, literature has been present in our lives, influencing several aspects that we may not have even heard of. Literature has been considered timeless, but how come, in this age where accessibility is at its easiest, the long-lasted love for this silently written art is dying?

Perhaps it is the progress humanity has achieved. With our technology nowadays, where every piece of information can be found with one simple click of a button, a book’s appearance and importance have become obsolete. But would one really call this progress, if the concept of reading and understanding is turning out to be irrelevant in our everyday lives, where we just lose interest?

No. And that is something that must be addressed.

This restraints and limits so much of our potential. Our attention, knowledge, imagination… patience.

Books are non-living, yet they can say so much. Poems are so short, yet they can tell one’s lifetime. If the beauty of this art can be more well-known, the digital age could be used as the most dangerous weapon. If we could erase the false, petty stereotypes associated with loving literature, then the adoration that humans have possessed for centuries can be revived once again. It’s not the literature that’s the problem—sure, the content’s importance and relevancy change, but one cannot deny that literature has helped, changed, and improved people, no matter their age, status, or gender.

Books are not just for ‘smart’ people; they are for everyone with the desire to know more about the world around them. Because they are personal: autobiographies, even the young Anne Frank’s diary. They are powerful and spiritual: the Bible and other religious texts are something that anybody knows and follows.

Furthermore, they are fun, where you can live in another world created by another human’s mind, where you can meet characters that you can relate to or speak to you. They are also where you can find the answers that you might be looking for, as well as the pearl of wisdom that completely changes your perception. Through these words, you can see the pleasant and the serene, the genuine history of the world and the facets of people, as well as the horrors and unbelievable sides of humanity.

Is it boring because it talks about horses and swords and so much political strategy? It’s all fine; you can find something else that captures your interest. Do you want to read something romantic? The infamous William Shakespeare has multiple, and so do contemporary authors that you can find on social media. The free libraries that are usable everywhere in the world, even in the phone that you hold, have so much that you are bound to find one that completely enamors you. There’s so much to read, and there’s so much to miss out.

All in all, anything can be written, and anything can be read through our screens, even the ones written and left behind by the authors on paper or engraved on the walls of caves. Literature has been around forever. There’s so much variety that it makes you forget the word ‘boring’ because the human imagination is limitless, and opening your heart to this craft proves that so is yours.
